The objective of this thesis project is to explore the significant layering technique of impressionism. The impressionist painters started building their paintings with layers and layers of paint until they achieved the final impression or depiction of the scene being painted. This project will likewise explore the couture elements and all the layers that go into making a final couture piece. The retail design journey will begin with couture elements from the ground level and continue with the process until it ends with the final extravagant couture pieces on the first level. The viewer experiences the entire journey and process of how couture pieces come to life.

Impressionism is a movement of art that emerged in 1870s, France. Rejecting the rigid rules of the beaux-arts (“fine arts”), impressionist artists showcased a new way to observe and depict the world in their work, foregoing realistic portrayals for fleeting impressions of their surroundings. Light played an important role in their paintings.
